What Is 'True Grit' About? (Spoilers!)

What Is 'True Grit' About? 'True Grit' is a Western with plenty of comedy that follows the spirited Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), a sharp-witted 14-year-old girl whose father was shot to death by Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Mattie hires Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), the meanest U.S. Marshal in town, and sets off into the Indian Nations to track down her father's killer. They're joined by a Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf (Matt Damon) who is also tracking Tom Chaney.

How does 'True Grit' compare to the original? John Wayne's portrayal of Rooster Cogburn earned him an Oscar and the film itself has been described as a masterpiece. So this film had a lot to live up to. The short answer is the modern version of 'True Grit' is grittier. The characters are dirtier, the dialogue more authentic and the comedy less hammy.

Is it OK for Kids to See? No, unless you don't mind your children watching men hanged, shot and stabbed. Considering the lighthearted tone of the movie, the violence is startlingly realistic and graphic.

How Does it Compare to 'No Country for Old Men'? It really isn't very much like 'No Country for Old Men.' Despite the violence, the movie is mostly upbeat and adventurous. 'True Grit' is more like the Coen brothers doing a take on a Young Indiana Jones complete with a pile of snakes at the bottom of a cave.

How Is Hailee Steinfeld's debut movie performance? Fantastic. Between the archaic dialogue and the dangerous-looking stunt scenes we can't imagine this was an easy role to play. The charming Hailee Steinfeld navigates the role flawlessly, portraying a browbeating, no-nonsense kid perfectly.

What Are People Talking About? Jeff Bridges for his performance as Rooster Cogburn. Who knew the affable Dude could also be a gun-totting, drink-swilling badass?
