So really the most important thing that's happening this week, other than the release of 'Tron: Legacy,' is my birthday. I know everyone's been waiting for it, and it's finally here, and I appreciate your excitement and your patience. But if for some reason that event doesn't have you absolutely transfixed with anticipation, there are still a few other film-related events across the country worth checking out.
But before we get to the stuff we think you should see elsewhere in the country, we would like to remind you to please leave comments and send in emails with any suggestions you may have for evens, screenings, or other opportunities film fans may have to share with others in their celebration of the medium. Austin
On December 16, check out 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar – complete with a feast prepared to thematically match the Coen Brothers' rural reimagining of Homer's Odyssey. Starting at 7:30 PM, indulge in a specially-prepared menu featuring (among other courses) "beef and gravy on toast points (prison food), pulled porkraised brisket (greasy horse), gopher grits (gopher)," and "giant peach pie fresh off the sill, served on newspaper." Chicago
On December 14, zip over to the Siskel Film Center for a screening of David Lynch's 'Mulholland Drive,' which won numerous awards during its theatrical run and was subsequently named the Best Film of the Decade by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. On December 15, Pritzker Park is hosting a free screening of none other than 'A Christmas Story,' Bob Clark's classic holiday film (not to be confused with his other holiday film, 'Black Christmas'). These outdoor screenings regularly start around dusk, but check out the Eventful website for showtimes and ticket information.
Dallas
On both December 17 and 18, check out one of the great cult audience-participation movies of all time, 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail,' at the Inwood Theatre. Check out the Inwood Theatre website for showtimes and ticket information.
Los Angeles
On December 18, if you aren't celebrating my birthday, head over to the Aero Theatre for a 70mm screening of 'Lawrence of Arabia,' David Lean's greatest opus. Check out the Egyptian Theatre website for ticket information.
Also on December 18, join filmmaker Shane Black at the Silent Movie Theatre for a double feature of two of his best films, 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' and 'The Long Kiss Goodnight.' Eggnog is promised, but check out the Silent Movie Theatre website for ticket information.
And for a massively exciting, special treat, make sure you visit the New Beverly Cinema on Sunday night, December 19, for a special double feature of Richard Rush's 'The Stunt Man' and one of my all-time favorite movies, 'Freebie and the Bean.' Although the films will also be shown on Monday, December 20, on Sunday stars Steve Railsback and Barbara Hershey will be in attendance (schedule permitting) to discuss their work in 'The Stunt Man' (which it should also be noted is being screened via a new 35mm print). New York
Two more midnight shows are happening at New York's Sunshine Cinema: 'The Shining.' Admittedly a sort of left-field holiday film (unless you are yourself suffering from cabin fever), but Kubrick is the gift that keeps on giving. Check out the Sunshine Cinema website for ticket information.
Seattle
At Seattle's Egyptian Theatre, check out Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, the family-friendly 'Ponyo,' at the decidedly family-unfriendly time of midnight. Check out the Egyptian Theatre website for ticket information.
